The Sword of the Lord and of Gideon

is the title of the upcoming symposium on John Brown (who raided Harper's Ferry, West Virginia) just before the Civil War. Brown lived in Springfield from 1847-1851 before embarking on his quest for abolition.

Springfield Technical Community College is hosting this symposium on Saturday, October 17th, 2009. It commemorates the 150th anniversary of John Brown's Raid.

Keynote speaker will be David S. Reynolds, author of John Brown, Abolitionist: The Man Who Killed Slavery, Sparked the Civil War, and Seeded Civil Rights.

The conference is free, and open to the public. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the conference begins at 9 a.m. in Scibelli Hall (building 2) on the campus grounds.
