Scholarship deadline approaching fast!
This Friday March 14 is the deadline to apply for most of the scholarships available to STCC Students for the Fall 2008 term. Many of the scholarships are available to graduating students, and can be used to continue education at another institution such as a four year college.
The different scholarships are based on different criteria, and not all of them require high grades. Winners for some of the scholarships are chosen in part based on service to the community or the college (for example, the Board of Higher Education Scholarship, the Civitan Scholarship, the Edmond P. Garvey Award, the Ernest J. Henderson Scholarship, the Latino Breakfast Club-Eugenio Maria De Hostos Scholarship and the Teresina B. Thompson Award).
Other scholarships are for students studying in particular areas, such as the Eugene A. Pederzoli Scholarship, for students in Health Services or Nursing, and the Springfield Industrial Association Award, for students majoring in either Engineering Transfer or an Engineering Technologies curriculum.
A few scholarships are limited to students of a particular background, for example women (Trudie David Scholarship), students who are Hispanic/Latino (Latino Breakfast Club-Eugenio Maria De Hostos Scholarship), students of Italian descent (Tazzini Award), veterans (Carl F. Junker Award) or single parents (Dan Roulier Single Parent Scholarship). For other scholarships, students of any background may apply, as long as they meet the minimum number of credits earned and in some cases, a minimum academic QPA.
Some applications require letters of recommendation; some require that an applicant write an essay about a particular topic. There are some scholarships that do not require either of these, but the applications have questions to be filled in with answers.
A listing of scholarships and their requirements can be found on the college website, with links to the applications themselves. We also have a list of the requirements and copies of applications in the library, at the Reference desk. Many common questions about the scholarships are answered on this page of the college’s website.
Besides the Foundation and College scholarships overseen by the STCC Scholarships and Awards Committee, there are a number of additional scholarship opportunities available to our students. Here is a list of some of them.
