As everyone probably knows, February is Black History Month. We will be highlighting various Web sites that are in keeping with the spirit of this month. The first Web site we want to bring to your attention is The History Channel. They've put together a nice page that has links devoted to Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., video footage of great moments in the Civil Rights Movement, as well as personalities talking about various aspects of the Movement that were particularly important to them.
This background on the origins of Black History Month is taken right from the Web site:
"To recall and celebrate the positive contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week. The first celebration occurred February 12, 1926. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for this celebration to coincide with the birthdays of Black abolitionist/editor Frederic Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, as part of the nation's bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month."
Check out the Web site for much more content relating to this month long celebration.
