NOW THAT'S A REFERENCE LIBRARIAN!
Imagine my delight this past Sunday morning, when I found an article by Sam Roberts extolling the efforts of a reference librarian on the first page of the NY TIMES Arts Section! David Smith, (whose business card reads "Librarian to the Stars," according to the article, is a supervising librarian in an area of the New York Public Library (Yes, the one with the lions) called the Allen Room and Wertheim Study. He has worked with authors as various as Roy Blount, Jr. (a personal hero of mine), Ira Berkow, and Jimmy Breslin, among many others.
Though my day to day reference routine is not exactly as glamourous as Mr. Smith's, I have to say that I agree completely with this comment: "[I'm] ...a connector. I’m in a position to save people time. I know where to find things." That's what librarians do best. He is absolutely right!
